Leverage rebates and incentives to reduce your cost to acquire backup power.

Save on Energy Storage Systems to Keep Your Home Powered

The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is a California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) initiative designed to provide financial incentives for installing energy storage technologies at residential, commercial, industrial, and non-residential sites.

The program is especially focused on battery storage systems that enhance grid reliability and support the state’s decarbonization goals. Priority is given to installations in vulnerable communities, customers at risk of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), and critical infrastructure sites, with higher incentive tiers for low-income and medically vulnerable households.

Once approved, the incentive helps offset the upfront cost of battery storage systems, making clean energy more accessible and affordable. Participating utilities like PG&E and SCE provide detailed guidance and application portals through their websites, offering both general market incentives and equity resilience incentives for eligible participants. SGIP plays a key role in helping Californians achieve energy independence, increase resiliency, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

How to Participate

Find an Installer

Choose a contractor from the SGIP list of installers. The installers have been vetted by SGIP and can assist on maximizing your incentives and rebates.

Install Your System

Certain Fortress Power systems are eligible for the program and must be paired with the Guardian Monitor to remit information back to the power supplier.

Enroll in the Program

After the installation is complete, you and/or your contractor can work with your utility supplier to register your system for the program. You can also enroll using Fortress Power’s application.

Get Paid!

Once your system is installed and all eligibility requirements have been verified, SGIP will issue a direct payment to the homeowner. The installer may also receive the incentive before the system is operational, in which case they would pass the incentive to the homeowner.

Program Benefits

Earn Upfront Incentives

Upfront incentives reduce the cost to you before or shortly after installation. SGIP provides a general market rebate of $250/kWh. In addition to this general market rebate, there are two additional categories of higher SGIP rebates for residential customers, eligibility criteria varies.

Open to Residential & Commercial Customers

SGIP is available for both residential and non-residential applications.

Take Advantage of the Federal Tax Investment Credit (ITC)

You may also qualify for a Federal Tax Investment Credit (ITC). Consult with a tax advisor on eligibility requirements.

Contribute to a Cleaner Future

Unlike generators that run on fossil fuels, batteries are a cleaner, quieter option for powering your home during an outage. Keep powering your home on your own terms while helping to reduce air pollution and keep energy costs down.

How the Program Works Once Your System is Installed

System Monitoring

The battery storage system needs to be installed in a location with an internet service so your utility supplier can monitor your system. Use our Guardian Monitor & mobile app.
