Green Mountain Power BYOD Program

Leverage up-front incentives to reduce your cost to acquire backup power.

What Is the Green Mountain Power Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program?

Green Mountain Power’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program in Vermont offers customers the opportunity to receive rebates of up to $10,500 when they install qualifying home battery storage systems and agree to share stored energy during peak demand periods. Participants can select their preferred battery brands and installation providers, allowing for flexibility and personalization. By contributing stored energy during times of high demand, customers not only enhance their own energy resilience but also help reduce overall energy costs for the community. In the BYOD program, you get seamless battery backup power to keep you connected, and you also share energy during peak energy use times. By sharing some stored energy, you help to reduce costs for all GMP customers during peaks.

Program Incentives

Upfront Enrollment Incentive

Incentive amounts are based on how much stored energy you agree to share during peak events:

$850 / kW

for three hour battery discharges

$950 / kW

for four hour battery discharges

Extra Incentives

If you’re retrofitting an existing solar system in an area of the state where more energy storage would be most beneficial for all customers, there’s an additional $100 per kW incentive.

How to Participate

How the Program Works Once Your System is Installed

System Monitoring

The battery storage system needs to be installed in a location with an internet service so GMP can monitor your system. The Guardian Gateway or Dongle is required to program communications. You can see the same information using the Fortress Power Owner App.

Battery Dispatch

After your system is installed and approved, you decide how much energy you’ll share during peak events. Peak Events occur when Vermont uses the most energy, about five to eight times per month and last three hours. If weather is forecasted for your area that is likely to cause outages, they’ll keep your battery for backup power.

Common Questions About the Green Mountain Power BYOD Program

The Green Mountain Power BYOD program pays Vermont homeowners an upfront incentive to install a qualifying home battery system and share a portion of stored energy with GMP during peak demand periods. By enrolling, you help reduce energy costs for all GMP customers while earning one of the largest upfront battery incentives of any utility in the country — and keeping seamless backup power for your home.

Incentives are paid as a one-time upfront check mailed within approximately two weeks of GMP confirming your system is operational. The incentive is $850 per kW for a 3-hour discharge commitment or $950 per kW for a 4-hour discharge commitment, up to 10 kW. An additional $100 per kW is available for systems installed in constrained areas of GMP's grid. Contact Fortress Power to get an estimate based on your specific system size.

The following Fortress Power products are approved for the GMP BYOD program: eForce, eBoost, eFlex MAX, and eVault MAX batteries, paired with any Fortress Power Envy series inverter. Your system must be installed by a qualified installer, connected to the internet at all times, and used exclusively for home backup power. Contact Fortress Power to confirm the right configuration for your home and BYOD enrollment goals.

During a peak event, GMP remotely adjusts your battery — such as discharging it at a specific rate — to help manage grid demand. Peak events occur an average of 5 to 8 times per month and typically last 3 to 6 hours. GMP sends advance notice at least 4 hours beforehand via smartphone app or other electronic methods. Before weather events likely to cause outages in your area, GMP takes steps to minimize battery use so you retain backup power when you need it most.

The initial program term is 10 years, renewing annually after that. If you leave the program early, a pro-rated portion of your upfront incentive is repaid based on the months remaining. There is also a monthly integration and communication fee of $3.97 billed through your GMP utility bill for the duration of your enrollment.

Enrolling turns your battery into an income-generating asset with no additional hardware required. You earn a substantial upfront check — up to $10,500 for a qualifying system — simply for agreeing to let GMP use a portion of your stored energy a few times a month. Your backup power is protected, enrollment is handled by Fortress Power's team, and the program runs automatically in the background without any action required from you. For Vermont homeowners with an eligible Fortress Power system, it's one of the most straightforward ways to maximize the return on your storage investment.
