Rocky Mountain Power Wattsmart Battery Program
Leverage incentives to reduce your cost to acquire backup power.

Rocky Mountain Power’s Wattsmart program offer financial incentives to homeowners and businesses who install battery storage systems in their territory. Homeowners can receive $400/kW with a cap of $2,000 per household. Businesses can receive up to $500/kW. The incentive is based on the continuous power level of the inverter. Prior to the $2,000, Fortress Power’s Envy 12kW inverter provided the highest incentive in the Wattsmart program.
In addition to the upfront incentive, participants receive an annual bill credit of $15/kW, starting in year two. That’s a $180 credit for the Envy 12kW Inverter.
Wattsmart aims to promote renewable energy adoption and enhance grid reliability by using clean, renewable energy stored in battery systems instead of traditional power plants. Rocky Mountain Power generally calls on participants’ battery storage system for five minutes instead of calling on expensive, less efficient gas peaker plants. Meanwhile, your battery storage system may serve as back-up electricity to your home or business, in case you ever need it. By participating, you will earn an upfront enrollment incentive and ongoing bill credits while helping to keep electricity prices in the region among the nation’s lowest.
How to Participate
Contact Fortress Power for installer recommendations.
Certain Fortress Power systems are on the Eligible Equipment List and must be paired with the Guardian Gateway to remit information back to Rocky Mountain Power.
After the installation is complete, submit the application to RMP for participation. RMP will then verify ability to communicate and dispatch the battery.
Customers who also enroll via the Fortress Power website will get their checks faster as Fortress Power can verify the communication earlier in the RMP process.
Once your system is operational and all eligibility requirements have been verified, RMP will mail a check for the upfront incentive. You’ll also receive ongoing bill credits as long as you are enrolled in the program. Combine that with the corresponding Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) to maximize your savings!
Program Benefits
Upfront incentives reduce the cost to you before or shortly after installation. Customers can qualify for $400/kWh (based on battery capacity available for discharge).
Commercial battery incentives qualify for $500/kWh.
Customers are also eligible for an ongoing annual bill credit of $15 per kW starting in year two of the program. The annual credit will be divided and applied equally to your monthly bill.
You may also qualify for a Federal Tax Investment Credit (ITC). Consult with a tax advisor on eligibility requirements.
Unlike generators that run on fossil fuels, batteries are a cleaner, quieter option for powering your home during an outage.
How the Program Works Once Your System is Installed
System Monitoring
The battery storage system needs to be installed in a location with an internet service so Rocky Mountain Power can monitor your system. The Guardian Gateway is required to program communications. You can see the same information using our mobile app.
Battery Dispatch
Rocky Mountain Power plans to use battery systems to provide grid services, helping to maintain grid stability by responding to rapid and unexpected electricity fluctuations. These events are often five minutes long. Find out more at Wattsmart Grid.
Incentives
Participating customers receive an incentive shortly after installation to reduce the battery’s cost. The incentive is based on the system installed. Customers also earn an ongoing annual bill credit starting in year two of the program.
Residential battery incentives are based on $400/kW with a cap of $2,000 per battery and a limit of two batteries per household.
