Power your home, save money, and support Oregon’s clean energy future.

Leverage incentives to reduce your cost to acquire backup power.

The Portland General Electric (PGE) Smart Battery pilot offers financial incentives to Oregon homeowners who install battery storage systems. The program is helping PGE identify how home battery systems can cost-effectively increase renewable adoption and enhance grid reliability. While currently a pilot, the Smart Battery pilot is expected to evolve into a more valuable, full program later this year.

Combine the Smart Battery pilot with Energy Trust of Oregon’s upfront incentive that can provide up to $4,800. You may also qualify for a Federal Investment Tax Credit. By combining these incentives, you can reduce the cost to acquire backup power by over 50%.

The PGE Smart Battery pilot only uses your battery 10 to 15 times per year – usually the hottest or coldest days. Your battery stays available for outages or whenever you need it and you’re always in control of how much energy you share. Sign up with your Fortress Power system to reduce your home’s impact on the environment and take control of your energy costs with clean, renewable energy from the sun.

How to Participate

Find an Installer

Find an Energy Trust solar trade ally contractor. Systems must be installed by an approved Energy Trust solar trade ally contractor

Install Your System

All Fortress Power residential batteries are on the Eligible Battery List, and must be paired with a Fortress Power inverter and the Guardian Gateway to remit information back to PGE.

Enroll in the Program

After the installation is complete, enroll in the Smart Battery Pilot program and choose your equipment incentive terms. Your installer will work with you on enrolling, or you can enroll using the Fortress Power EnergyBroker program application.

Get Paid!

Your Energy Trust cash incentive will be paid directly to your contractor, who will deduct the incentive amount from your invoice, reducing the upfront cost of your solar installation. During the year, you can also earn discharge incentives. Combine that with the corresponding Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) to maximize your savings!

Program Benefits

Earn Upfront Incentives

Upfront incentives reduce the cost to you before installation. Customers can qualify for up to $5,400, depending on system size, which is paid directly to your contractor, who will deduct the incentive amount from your invoice, reducing the upfront cost of your solar installation. Increased incentives for income-qualified homes are also available.

Earn Discharge Incentives

Every time PGE requests a battery discharge, you can earn up to $26 per request, depending on battery capacity.

Take Advantage of the Federal Tax Investment Credit (ITC)

You may also qualify for a Federal Tax Investment Credit (ITC). Consult with a tax advisor on eligibility requirements.

Contribute to a Cleaner Future

Unlike generators that run on fossil fuels, batteries are a cleaner, quieter option for powering your home during an outage. Keep powering your home on your own terms while helping to reduce air pollution and keep energy costs down.

How the Program Works Once Your System is Installed

System Monitoring

The battery storage system needs to be installed in a location with an internet service so PGE and EnergyTrust can monitor your system. Use our Guardian Monitor & mobile app.

Battery Dispatch

After your trade ally contractor installs your battery, PGE will signal your battery to request a discharge of stored clean energy back to your home or the grid when energy demand is high, prices are up or electricity has a bigger carbon footprint. You can always choose to opt out and your battery will stay fully available to you during a power outage.

Event Parameters

PGE expects to call on the battery around 15 times per year, but may switch to more, shorter events in the future, mostly during very hot or cold days when the grid is under extra pressure. Since this is a pilot program, they may also run technical tests. Homeowners can opt out of any PGE dispatch.

Incentives

Participating customers can receive up to $26, paid via a bill credit, per discharge event, depending on battery capacity. The amount is $1.70 per kWh per event.
